The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 ended Red Cloud's War on the Bozeman Trail (1866-1868). In the treaty, the Sioux promised to stop harassing and raiding the settlers moving across the northern plains. In return, the Sioux were given a reservation in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, forever. They were also to be provided with numerous provisions by the U.S. government.
