A lack of trees on the Great Plains.
Due to a lack of a source of wood for building, homesteaders needed to be innovative. Homesteaders used sod to build their homes and barbed wire, invented by Joseph Glidden in 1874, to construct fences around their 80 to 160 acre farms.
