Millions of cheap Texas longhorns were available in southern Texas during the 1860s. Goodnight and his partner Loving established the first cattle trail to western boomtowns following the Civil War. The story of the fortune soom spread and before long, millions of head of steer were being driven north to rail heads in Texas. The Chisholm Trail to Abilene was first established in 1867. Dodge City later developed as the "Cowboy Capital."
