After gold was discovered around Pikes Peak, thousands of prospectors headed to Colorado in 1859 hoping to strike it rich. These people were called "59ers." These pioneers often came in conflict with the Cheyenne and Arapaho indians living nearby. This led to the Sand Creek massacre of 1864.
